Advent

“[T]here is far off in the deeps of [dusk] a sound so faint that for all you can tell it may be only the sound of the silence itself. [Y]ou catch a whiff of some fragrance that reminds you of a place you’ve never been, a time you have no words for. The extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinary moment just before it happens. Advent is the name of that moment.”

~Frederick Buechner

Climate care

“The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope.”
~ Wendell Berry

Did you know? (Remember while you’re Christmas shopping).

“Materialism is the only form of distraction from true bliss.”

~ Doug Horton

Good advice for Advent & Christmas

To love as God loves.

I’m doing an Advent series based on a 1959 book by Roberta Bondi of Emory University. That’s its title: to love as God loves.

Bondi’s study of the sayings of the Desert Fathers and Mothers of the fourth to sixth centuries reveal this as their recognized goal of human life. This is why you are living: to learn to love as God loves. And then to do so.

It’s a lofty goal built on tiny steps. It begins by believing, by God’s grace, that it can be true.
